Ft. Hood is unique to normal combat because it happened on U.S. soil and the shooter was one of our own soldiers killing his fellow soldiers. I don't know drastically it breaks protocol but half-mast seems appropriate to me.

If those guys had died in Iraq or Afghanistan their passing would have been unnoticed save perhaps mention on "This Week" on Sunday morning. Strange values we have.

I agree this makes it look like their lives are more important then those who died in Iraq or Afghanistan. Obama needs to get a clue that abusing the half staff flag command is setting a bad example. We need to be much selective on its use. 9-11 was very appropriate because the fact so many citizens were killed. Although I am very sad for all the families who lost loved ones at Fort Hood. They should not be signaled out as any more important of a lose then any other. Obama has no clue about this because he lacks any military experience. He is a politician and that's it.

Here in new york we do the same. Flags are at half staff several days every week.

In Washington state, when a Washington state soldier die in combat; Governor Gregoire (statewide or state facilities only I don't know) decrees we fly our flags lowered. The email notifications I've seen includes the soldiers name. The flags are at half mast a lot.
