    I think you missed one possibility - adventures of a hapless village caught between the two sides of an Anglo-Saxon war. They get burned down by one side and then by the other after a year of rebuilding. Then they take to the deep woods and connive to steal from first one side and then the other making it look like the other side did it. They raid other villages on either side of the boarder leaving tracks back to the other side then disperse and infiltrate back to their own hidden village. This intensifies the war until... well, I dunno, until the surprise ending.
