Well, here we go. Every time the issue of legalizing marijuana is debated, out from the woodwork come the teetotalers that want to draw comparisons to alcohol. They say people will overdose, crime will go up, and a host of other nonsensical arguments. The only argument that these people have that holds water in my opinion is the automobile equasion. Here is the sticking point. People will do idiotic things in a car. Plain and simple. Maybe the real question is should we ban cars. Texting, calling people, putting on make up, eating, playing with the radio, getting sexually stimulated, following your gps and not your eyes, disciplining your children in the back seat. I could go on, but plain old not paying attention to what you are doing is most likely just as responsible for driving deaths in the US as stoned drivers. I smoke pot. I am also a responsible human and do not drive while high. You cannot legislate stupidity. So stop comparing weed to alcohol. Really drunk people have no sense of what is going on around them. Really stoned people just want to watch crappy movies. Marijuana is not crack. Marijuana is not heroin. Marijuana is not LSD. And marijuana is not alcohol. Also, for every person who chooses to legalize it, there are 10 more that use it who will not, for fear of opressive drug laws and condomnation from their "straight" peers.

Two of the reasons it's taking so long are: 1. The interests of the prison industrial complex 2. The interests of the DEA and other law enforcement agencies dependent upon a drug war

I think we need to change how we view these drugs. Much like alcohol we need laws on the books that determine levels that are illegal for things like driving. Making the drugs themselves illegal only helps trump up the price. If some or all of these drugs are legalized we must not assume that the social problems of these drugs will be solved. They may only increase just as lower drinking ages affect teen deaths. We must assume that addiction rates would go up and the medical costs for people addicted would also go up. So just making these drugs legal would not solve every problem and will probably create new ones. Non of the so called illegal drugs now have any real benefit to any healthy person. Alcohol can be considered also to have no good effects. Yet, we continue to accept the deaths caused by alcohol. I am wondering if the majority of American's will accept the deaths caused by making some of the illegal drugs legal? Marijuana is already legal in some states for those medically requiring it.
