I wore a Boston starting when I was 8 and wore it until high school. My lower curve stopped progressing just short of the need for surgery, they said at the time. 20 years later and my curve/rotation have worsened significantly. They say surgery is necessary now. I am so scared. I had hoped that it was all over, but now I am in my mid thirty’s and I feel so old. I hurt everyday, and sometimes just getting off the couch is impossible without help. I hate it and am feeling like no one really knows what it is like unless they have been there too. Glad I found this site. It’s nice to not feel alone anymore. pants101@hotmail.com if anyone is so inclined to write. I promise I am not always this whiney!

My daughter was diagnosed earlier this month.. she is 8. She goes Wednesday for her brace fitting… (for the Charleston) her curve is at about 17 degrees.. curving right. They monitored her for a year prior to this Diagnosis earlier this month. She curved 7 degrees this year alone. The Orthopedic decided since she is only 8 and curving rapidly as she grows that her prognosis would not be good without intervention now. She is very devestated and scared.. This is all new to us..

What I wore was not listed here…I had to wear a plaster cast with a wedge in it trying to restraighten the curve..still had to have a spinal fusion tho.Now it is all coming back to play catch up as my legs are slowly becoming mis-shapen…saw a podiatrist and he feels I should be wearing leg braces…so that is next I guess…

I’m currently wearing the SpineCor Brace as I have been for almost ten months now. Though it does look more comforting than the Boston Brace and the Milwaukee Brace, its still not perfect—it doesn’t breath at ALL so its always like a sauna, and you can only take it off for four hours (opposed to the Boston Brace where I think you can take it off for eight hours). In the brace, my curve (and rotation) aren’t getting any worse, which you have to understand, isn’t nearly as bad (and if it gets better that’s an added plus) but when I took it off for 24 hours it went from originally 30 degrees on top and 32 degrees on the bottom to 34 degrees on the top and 38 degrees on the bottom. I’m really annoyed because it seems like all this time that I’ve been wearing it have been for nothing, and if I have to wear a Boston Brace now instead, it’s so much money gone down the drain and so much strain that could have been used for something that actually worked.

I’ve been wearing the SpineCor Brace for a year and a half. So far, I love it. It’s confortable and well it’s preventing my curve from getting worse. I have a 41 degree curve w/ crazy rotation.

I was the first participant to wear the Milwaukee/Boston Brace in the 70’s. Yes, it was a mix of both types. Chin/Neck piece was WAY too high. We received the brace for free if I wore it for a year to try out. Ended up getting the Harrinton Rods in 1982

I wore a Milwaukee brace for 2+ years back in the mid- 70’s. One thing that concerns me about this now is the number of Xrays I had at that time, which were at least 10 every time I saw my Orthopedic Surgeon (every 1 to 3 months.) These were not low-exposure xrays like they have today. So I do worry about that. Also, my son was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and we will find out next month if they want him to start with a nightime treatment called the Providence Brace. Nice to have a website like this for Scoliosis patients and family members!

My 10 year old daughter just started wearing the Boston Brace a few days ago. I didn’t think her curves were bad enough to warrant the use of one but I was obviously wrong.

I wore the milwaukee brace for 8 years, then had surgery and harrignton rods inserted. My curve improved from 73 degrees to 55 degrees. If you want a friend in Australia, email me at viksie@hotmail.com
